John Maddern sailed with the First Convoy of 38 ships which departed from Albany, Western Australia on 1 November 1914.
He served on Gallipoli from May 1915 until the evacuation in December when he proceeded to France.
Brothers: Private James Fitzroy Maddern (1529) and Sergeant William Maddern (461) both survived and returned to Australia
