George Coates sailed with the First Convoy of 38 ships which departed from Albany, Western Australia on 1 November 1914.
Williamstown Botanic Gardens Curator William Crowe reported that prior to enlisting George Bernard Coates worked at the Gardens.
He boarded at the home of Mrs Robert Hansen, 23 Giffard St, Williamstown. From this house six men enlisted, including two of Mrs Hansens sons.
