Alfred attended North State School.
He wrote to his family in October 1915 from the 1st Australian Hospital, Heliopolis, describing it as 'the beautiful hotel taken over by the Australian military for a hospital'. He wrote that Dr McLean (from Williamstown) was there and he was keen to hear to be remembered to his local baseball and football teams.
His parents presented a photo of him to the Williamstown Cricket Club
